FIRST POST!

FIRST POST! I would love to take credit for the brilliant entry title, but unfortunately it was all Spams idea. Thanks, Spam. Unfortunately, in the mean time, Ive forgotten how to blog. So in true first post style.. there will be no extra content to this post. Kidding, of course. Ive been reading your comments on Stus post and was going to write back but then realized this might be better, and Id just like to say its been incredibly inspiring to read everything you have to say about Marilee Jones, the application process in general, and moving forward. All of your comments are so genuine and thoughtful, and it really makes a difference to hear what you have to say. Im so proud (sniff).. the 11s are all grown up! All jokes aside you guys really are rad. We of all people understand the power of your words, and your encouraging comments have been very helpful during this difficult time. Meanwhile, back at MIT, life has been blowing by at full pace. I have 16 more days until Im no longer a freshman, which entails five exams, three papers, and a presentation, as well as two concerts (ARCADE FIRE and ANDREW BIRD.. if youre not coming to Boston for the world-reknowned universities or beautiful city skylines, come for the incredible music scene) and Randall Munroe of xkcd! It also probably entails me falling over at one point until I realize I only have x days left, and crawl back to my desk to attack aromatic molecules once again. Minus that slight awkwardness factor. Sam and I got around that by evolving the Thanks-For-Reading-My-Blog Head Tilt. Observe: Works every time. Also, I dont know if you knew this, but I never got to go to my CPW. And this year, I actually had class during some of the crazy events and so I never got to eat liquid nitrogen ice cream. This was remedied last Tuesday at ESG, when the Kitchen Chemistry seminar made all different flavors not just vanilla and strawberry, but also brownie cookie dough and raspberry white chocolate, mango and chocolate chip cookie dough. My life changed forever that day. Abstract Title VII of the Civils Rights Act of 1964 is a U.S. federal law that prohibits employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion. Title V11 applies to private and public universities, local, state and federal governments, labor organizations and employment agencies. Although, an employee’s sexual orientation/identity isn’t a visible characteristic, it should be considered an important of diversity management. Bower and Blackmon (2003) states that managing diversity, particularly when it comes to sexual orientation diversity, may be just as significant as managing visible diversity (as cited in Ozeren, 2014, p. 1203). Research of those who identify as LGB (not T), indicates that they’re a sizeable population. Gates (2015) states that â€Å"it is generally thought that between 8.2 to 8.7 million United States citizens identity as LGB citizens (transgender number are less well-known), or between 3.5 to 3.7 percent of the population† (as cited in Shrader, 2016, p. 181). Minorities Should Have the Same Civil Rights as Everyone Else Free Essays

Most of us are used to being part of the larger portion of the society. We are so used with the manner of which democracy makes decisions, that is through the decision of the majority. This is our viewpoint of decision making, but an alarming issue is that we fail to see and hear what smaller groups in the society would want to say. Therefore, we all live in an imperfect society. Therefore if we want to achieve a society that could even come close to being perfect, we have to give equal civil rights to minorities. There exist variations of types of minorities or smaller groups within the society. They could be racial or ethnic, religious, gender and sexual, age, disabled, and other small groups within the society. As we can see here, there is a wide range of minority types. That just means that they are distributed within the society. If we also give it more thought, if these minorities were to count as one, the sum of them all could be greater than the majority. That could just meant that they should be treated equally as the society treats the majority. But why does the society do not treat the minorities as it should? There are many factors that prevent the society to grant equality to the minorities. One of the major problems of this issue is ethics. Universalism, Utilitarianism, natural law ethics, Kantian ethics, and other ethics that are in favor to the majority are much more popular than ethics that favors a particular group in the society. For me, the society seems to be configured in such a way that it only works for the many and is willing to sacrifice the small groups. Actually, the way society treats minorities contradicts the functions that the society was originally designed for. (Morigiwa 102) Inequality of rights between the majority and the minorities certainly contradicts the United States Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence explicitly communicates to us that we should always bear in mind that all men are should treat each other as equals. It also tells us that each and every one us are given rights by God himself. (Boyd Gawalt) It seems that the whole of society itself is the main source of the problem why minorities are treated unequally. The designers of the Declaration of Independence had foreseen that inequalities (like what minorities are experiencing right now) are the whole country’s problem. So that is why they have formulated laws to tell us to treat each other equally. It seems that inequality or marginalization is inevitable in a society. We always fail to treat others fair as we treat ourselves. Even though our society claims to be a religious and ethical one, again it seems to contradict itself. Even the holy books of word religions want to communicate to us something about this topic. For Christians, the Bible has told its readers to treat others as they would have wanted others to treat them. The Koran also teaches us to be fair with our fellow men. The message of every world religion seems to be equality. The Buddhist’s golden rule is almost synonymous what the Bible has to say about treating others. Marginalization of minorities is prevalent in the society. Little do most of us know that this marginalization has certain effects to the society. We may have been suffering unknowingly suffering from consequences of marginalization of minorities.  It seems that depriving civil rights to minorities will cause everyone within the society certain problems. Inequality in civil rights causes the whole system not to function smoothly. Mullaly has explored through this problem to give us some sort of much needed clarity regarding the issue of minorities. He had shown us how the personal becomes political. He pointed out that there is a need to recognize that social problems are certainly related to the larger structures of the society, this causes varying forms of oppression of members of the society. This will lead them to reject the ideas of those who aren’t familiar to them, thus resulting to marginalization of minorities. (Mullaly) He also pointed out that it is very important for us to recognize that oppression exists in the society. There is a great need for a non-judgmental and unbiased attitude by every members of the society. (Mullaly) Marginalization of minorities clearly hampers the productivity of the workforce. We should always bear in mind that these minorities make up more than half of our workforce, the workforce that all of us are deeply dependent on. As a conclusion, it seems that everyone doesn’t want marginalization of minorities. The society has laws that are carefully constructed to avoid such inequality in civil rights. But unfortunately, inequality of rights seems to be more prevalent in the society. Something must be done about the problem. It should be something that the whole of society should be thinking over. We see everyday the implications of inequality in civil rights in the forms of poverty, political chaos, never-ending disputes. I’m sure that all of us want a better place to live in. We all want to improve our living conditions. We should start by eliminating the flaw that makes our society imperfect. I can still remember the time when The Celtic almost beat the Lasers in the NAB Championships. I was ten years old, in Tennessee, watching the All-Star game with my relatives. We all sat on the couch, eating and watching the game. I remember the time KEG did a slam dunk on Kobo Bryant; the crowd went wild. My relatives were rooting for the Lasers while I was the only one rooting for The Celtic. My feelings for the Legendary Celtic are clear but some believe When legends die, dreams end. When dreams die, there is no greatness. For example, every time KEG left the court when his team was losing, he said something encouraging to his teammates in the finals. Because he would not allow the teams dream to die, he was took control of the teams future. In addition, during the pre-game interviews, the rookie, Rajah Rondo said that his team would win the All-Star game. He scored 50 points for his team in the finals, proving that when one believes and acts, they could accomplish what they set their minds to. Because The Celtic displayed a tremendous amount of fortitude, they believed in themselves and never gave up. The Celtic will always be a legendary team. Additionally, George Washington was a tenacious man. He never gave up on his dream for America to be free from tyranny. Washington helped the States win the American Revolution which was a grandiose accomplishment. Despite all the close friends he lost, he never stopped dreaming; he was really determined to defeat dictatorship. After winning the war, everyone revered George Washington and wanted him to be president of the United States. He was the leader of the Continental Congress and brought the United States together. George Washington went through a gamut of situations; from fighting through tough battles to losing a lot of friends/ allies. Although the Father of America has passed away, his dream is still with this free and prosperous country. Lastly, my Grandfather was a very wise and knowledgeable man. He always knew what to say and how to say it. My grandfather has told me many things about how I soon d live, study, behave, and that I should never quit. I was playing basketball Witt my 15 year old cousin, and he was out scoring me 60-32. I have never beaten him before because I am shorter than him and he has more experience. After I lost, I ran to my grandfather saying that I would never play basketball with my cousin again because I could never beat him. My grandfather laughed and said muff should never give up no matter what the situation is Always keep trying and you will end up accomplishing your goal His words have helped me a lot throughout my life and continue to encourage me today. Similarly, when my grandfather was teaching me fifth grade math when I was in fourth grade, I said it was really hard and I did not want to do it anymore. He said It is not good to Just quit when you start to do something. Whenever you are in the middle of something, you should always make a co mmitment to finish it. With my grandfathers legendary words of wisdom, I have realized it is not good to Just give up on my dreams. If my grandfather had been in the room when The Celtic lost, there would have been someone for me to commiserate with. The score was tied, there was five seconds left on the scoreboard, and the Lasers had the ball. They won the game but The Celtic never gave up and still fought through, trying to win. Similarly, George Washington tried as hard as he could to help the Americans in the Revolution and won. In addition, my grandfather told me to never give up no matter what. Because of all the things that have inspired me above, I do not believe that when legends die, dreams go with them.

Debate Essay The debate over whether men should wear long hair seems to be one that will never end. On one side there are conservatives who believe that long hair is the domain of women and that men are interfering with the status quo. On the other side are the liberals who believe that it is only fair for women to let men keep their hair long as a sign of equality which they advocate so much about. Long hair together with other exclusive feminine characteristics like such as breasts is what distinguishes men from women. This differentiation is biological and sociological. It is biological as women’s’ hair grows faster than men’s due to the hormone estrogen. Women also grow their hair because they know its attractiveness. A counter example can be given to clarify the social aspect. A woman with rather short hair-cut will resemble a boy regardless of other feminine features. This is because of the traditional association of women with long hair and boys with short hair. Before Britney Spears shaved her head, she was considered hot. Afterwards, due to the social stigma, she was rightfully but unfortunately labeled weird and her bald head was not attractive but was equivalent to that of some heavy metal rocker. They also believed that men who used hair as a judging factor of femininity and beauty were being backward, unfair and stereotypical. Male respondents aged between 19-24 did not seem to care or were not bothered by the length of women’s hair. They appear to be more liberal. According to them, the beauty and femininity of a woman or someone they would take as a girlfriend was not determined by how long the hair was. For male respondents between the ages 25 and 29, they felt that to a large extent a woman with long hair would be attractive to them. Hair is the first thing that strikes them when they see a woman and it is a great determinant of whether they go ahead and date that woman. Men within the range of 30-34 years were the most conservative. Most of them 80% confirmed that their wives/girlfriends had long hair and it was what drew them to the women. They further said that they would be very uncomfortable with a woman with short hair. Some claimed that if their wives or girlfriends were to shave their heads, they would appear to them as different people. Results and discussion One respondent had a very interesting view which was shared by almost all respondents. According to her hair is central to every woman’s identity, regardless of class, ethnicity or race, sexual orientation, or age. From the woman who cuts her hair after a divorce (in the fashion of â€Å"I m gonna wash that man right outta my hair†) to the lesbian with an attitude who shaves her head, women are obsessed with their hair and go to great lengths to tame, curl, dye style, or remove it. Changing a hairstyle is a way to mark a life transition or to make a statement about wanting to change. The respondent states that, â€Å"there were things in my life I could not change after divorce and for some reason it was real important for me to change something. So I got my hair cut†. For her, this made a big statement. Another respondent also contributed a lot to the research. She highlighted various instances showing how a â€Å"woman’s hair is linked to her femininity and beauty. She gave the example of an undergraduate student who perfects the hair flip in order to catch a guy’s eye or the migrant woman who gets up early every morning so that she can fix her daughter’s hair before going into the fields. She also gave the example of the business woman who manipulates her hair to meet the demands of her career (not too cute too sexy, too severe or too dated). Respondent 3, a male hair dresser also gave useful insight. He provided myriad instances of how women can laugh at their â€Å"hair problems† and their everyday struggles to make the best of a bad hair day. He provides examples of his clients who use hair as part of their rebellion against the traditional norms or heterosexual femininity. He indicated that they do so at their own peril, saying that these clients are forced to leave behind not only social approval from men, employers, families and others, but also many personal pleasures of hair. He described the sensual pleasures of having one’s hair washed, the comforts of a women only space, the intimacy of conversations, and even the occasional flirtations with a hairdresser. Such differences make all the difference in understanding what hair means to different women in different contexts. Most respondents contented that facial hair (beard or moustache) is thought to enhance masculine beauty in western culture. While the American Indians consider facial vulgar, they appreciate long hair for men. Another respondent still noted that there was an ancient association between hair and status. He gave the example of classical Rome and Greece where the supernatural power was symbolized by hair. The rulers distinguished themselves by wearing flowing and abundant locks. This kind of symbolism continued operating in the middle ages. Chieftains and long-halved kings disgraced criminals and political rivals by shaving their heads or cropping their hair. The ability to grow long hair is a useful indicator of youth and good health. Since women do not bald and can generally grow longer hair than men, most cultures associate longer hair with femininity. Some respondents felt that men and women are supposed to wear their hair differently. Being uncovered is as shameful for a woman as cutting or shaving her hair. Long hair is a woman’s glory. Some respondents felt that it should be acceptable within society for a man to wear his hair in whatever way allow him to express his own personal choice and in a style that suits him. The reason why long hair has not increased in popularity may be complex, but in part it is due to anti-long hair on men feeling in society, particularly in business, but also in society in general. With the exception of certain vocations such as rock stars, fashion models and artists, long hair on men is disapproved. Even in society many men and women generally disapprove of long hair on men. It is as though it is a symbol of something that is not right in with society, perhaps a link with the hippy era. Despite this more and more men seem to be growing their hair and it seems as though this time this trend is here to stay. The stereotype image of men with long hair is certainly of an unkempt, scruffy look. For long hair on men to become acceptable in society these barriers and stereotypes need to be broken down. Health appearance plays a part in physical attraction. Women with long hair are often thought to appear more beautiful. Although recently on the rise due to tremendous technological advancements there is nothing new about globalization. Even in the Middle Ages explorers such as Ibn-e-batuta and marc-o-polo started it off with epic journeys and returning home with tales of different cultures and places. Trade drives globalization today, modern transportation and telecommunications have made it easier to export and import from faraway places. United in diversity this is the motto of the European Union which began as an agreement between six countries with the goal of creating lasting regional piece. Global warming is a major crisis in the world today. Three causes of global warming are the greenhouse effect, increase of carbon dioxide emission, and the effects of temperature increase. The greenhouse effect is a primary cause of global warming. It is a gradual rise in temperature in the earth's atmosphere due to the heats absorption from the sun and entrapment of gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, in the air around the earth. An example of this is a bright sunlight will effectively warm an individual’s car on a cold, clear day by the greenhouse effect. The longer infrared wavelengths radiated by sun-warmed objects do not pass readily through the glass. The trap of this energy warms the interior of the vehicle. The trapping of the hot air so that it cannot rise and lose the energy by convection also plays a major role. Stephen Novdia stated, â€Å"The greenhouse effect was discovered by Joseph Fourier in 1824, first reliably experimented on by John Tyndall in 1858, and first reported quantitatively by Svante Arrhenius in 1896† (Global Warming). Greenhouse effect then becomes a primary cause of global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions cause global warming. It is gas in the earth’s atmosphere that came from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are formed by natural resources and are decomposed from buried dead organisms. A study on Carbon dioxide emissions in a magazine article on May 2009 found the following evidence: â€Å"In the 19th century, scientists realized that gases in the atmosphere cause a â€Å"greenhouse effect† which affects the planet's temperature. [The planet’s temperature will increase dramatically by the gases in the atmosphere absorbing the heat. ] These scientists were interested chiefly in the possibility that a lower level of carbon dioxide gas might explain the ice ages of the distant past. At the turn of the century, Svante Arrhenius calculated that emissions from human industry might someday bring a global warming. Other scientists dismissed his idea as faulty. In 1938, G. S. Callendar argued that the level of carbon dioxide was climbing and raising [the] global temperature, but most scientists found his arguments implausible. It was almost by chance that a few researchers in the 1950s discovered that global warming truly was possible. In the early 1960s, C. D. Keeling measured the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere: it was rising fast. Researchers began to take an interest, struggling to understand how the level of carbon dioxide had changed in the past, and how the level was influenced by chemical and biological forces. They found that the gas plays a crucial role in climate change, so that the rising level could gravely affect our future. † (Weart) This magazine article influence Americans to recycle because the article is geared to them. With the CO2 causing the increase in weather, it also causes the increase of the greenhouse effect. The CO2 can affect the climate change and the future of the world if the greenhouse effect increases. Causes of global warming exist and so do the effects. Revkin stated, â€Å"Americans lead in moving to a world where ‘fossil fuels have been largely modified for carbon recycling or replaced by carbon-neutral alternatives. † (Challenges to Both Left and Right on Global Warming) A result of increase of weather are polar ice caps and temperature rising. When the temperature increases, the polar ice caps will melt, causing glaciers to melt as well. Glaciers are made up of fresh frozen water and when they melt into the ocean, which is composed of salt water, the ocean currents will be altered. The result of ocean currents altering will also affect the species that live in the ocean. Some species live in salt water and others live in fresh water, but cannot live in both. The increase of water in the ocean will cause evaporation to increase. The increase of probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves will increase as well. With all the water in the ocean and the weather increasing, it will cause warm water and more hurricanes. Global warming has both causes and effects. It is one of the most major crisis that will affect the world today, yet the most difficult to resolve. If I had a choice, I would make everybody recycle and you use resources. I would also have Americans reduce the Carbon emissions. Even if we stopped emitting greenhouse gases today, the Earth would still be warm by some kind of degree Fahrenheit.
